What are Ligations and when are they used?

Updated: Nov 22, 2023

To answer the question “What are ligations?”, here is the definition of a ligation:

A ligation refers to the tying of an anatomical structure, such as a blood vessel or other hollow structure during surgical or other medical procedures. Ligation is performed, for example, during surgery to reduce blood loss, to tie off fallopian tubes or seminal ducts during a tubectomy or vasectomy, and in the treatment of hemorrhoids.

An elastic ligation refers to the confinement of a limb, resulting in a temporary interruption of blood flow. This procedure is used, for example, for open, heavily bleeding injuries to reduce blood loss.

How are ligations used when treating hemorrhoids? This results in an interruption of the hemorrhoidal blood supply, so that the ligated hemorrhoids necrotize and fall off over the course of time. The procedure is performed by constricting the hemorrhoids with special rubber bands.

What is a ligation and how is it performed in the treatment of hemorrhoids?

There are different methods of treating hemorrhoids depending on their severity grade. What is a ligation in the treatment of hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoidal artery ligation (HAL) is a gentle treatment method that has become standard in hemorrhoid therapy.

Hemorrhoid artery ligation is a useful treatment method for hemorrhoids of severity grades I and II, when other conservative treatment methods (sclerotherapy, medication) have not led to the desired success. However, it is mainly used for hemorrhoids of severity grades II and III, where it has been proven to be extremely effective.

After the hemorrhoid artery has been precisely located acoustically using an ultrasound sensor, the ligation is then performed. In the process, the corresponding vessels are tied off. Since this procedure takes place in a painless area of the rectum, anesthesia is not necessary. Since due the ligation, the hemorrhoids are no longer supplied with blood, the pressure on the vessels is immediately reduced.

What are the risks associated with a ligation? During ligation, the physician ties off pronounced hemorrhoid knots with a rubber band. The enlarged tissue gradually reduces to the normal level by cutting off the blood supply. After about two weeks, the dead tissue comes off, along with the rubber band, and is eliminated painlessly. The procedure is gentle on the organs and painless for the patient. There is only occasionally slight bleeding and minor pain. The risks are accordingly low.

What is a ligation and what are the requirements in surgery?

The question “What is a ligation?” also arises in the context of both cardiovascular and general surgeries. Ligation is a very common method used in numerous surgeries. This includes ligating interruption of blood vessels, for example, to stop a hemorrhage from the surgical site or to prevent blood loss when resection of a perfused structure is about to be performed.

The ligating interruption of blood vessels is achieved by the surgeon by using vascular clips. During surgery, these vascular clips are used, among other things, for the permanent or temporary ligation of blood vessels to stop bleeding. Following the careful preparation of a vessel, the vascular clip is placed using a clip applier, e.g. clip forceps.

Reliably functioning instrumentation is important for the effectiveness of ligation.

The Ackermann EUROPCLIP Ligation Systems from Ackermannsurgical.com include a complete portfolio of highly atraumatic, hemostatic ligating clips, made of titanium specifically suited for implantology. The clips are accompanied by suitable forceps for general surgical as well as endoscopic applications.

Vascular clips are hand-loaded into color-coded cartridges, which allow for nearly frictionless, one-handed loading of the clip applier. All clip cartridges can be used immediately after opening in the operating room during a ligation in surgery.

The Ackermann ligating clip forceps for open as well as for endoscopic applications facilitate handling during ligation. They are coated on the inside of the jaw through a special process to increase adhesion and durability.

Ackermann offers you a wide range of products. The Ackermann EUROPCLIP is one of the most atraumatic ligating clips on the global market. Its special angled profile causes the tip to close first during use, allowing for safer and more precise positioning during ligation.

It gains stability and resistance due to its U-shape, especially when compared to other square-shaped clips. The double closure on both sides resulting from the U-shape significantly reduces the risk of misalignment and thus leakage in ligations used during surgery.

The unique surface polishing process ensures an ideal balance between firm closure on the one hand and gentle tissue contact on the other, thus minimizing the risk of injury to the vessels.
